Statement from the Vice Rector for Education
Dear academic family,
In the morning of February 24, when we celebrated the 104th birthday of the Republic of Estonia, the Russian Federation launched a military offensive against Ukraine. This is not an attack on one country, but on the whole of Europe and the European values. By doing so, the President of the Russian Federation has violated the rules of the UN Charter prohibiting the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity and political independence of another state.
There is currently no direct security threat to Estonia. We are protected through alliances with the European Union and NATO. We have competent and reliable Defence Forces that are ready to defend our country in every way. At the same time, we must bear in mind that war also pours across borders and erodes security in other ways than just with soldiers and bullets. There are also victims in the information war. That is why I call on our academic family to watch out for fake news, to share only verified information and not to follow panic-mongers.
The best we can do right now is to keep a cool head and a sober mind. I also ask everyone to continue working and learning in the usual rhythm and in peaceful unity. We will stand together, express our support for Ukraine in a way that is possible and affordable to each of us.
