As part of the aeronautical engineering curriculum, third-year technicians annually construct an aircraft as a course project. For instance, in the summer of 2023, students successfully built and flew an unmanned seaplane.
The goal of the third-year aeronautical engineering students for the 2023/24 academic year is to build a UAS for the prestigious international competition 'IMechE UAS Challenge 2024', taking place in England in the summer of 2024. The competition is organized by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, renowned for hosting Europe's most established educational engineering competition, Formula Student.
To ensure the success of the project, it's essential to address not only the aircraft's construction but also other important aspects of the project. To this end, we are seeking students from other curriculums as well to join the project's support team. Their responsibilities will encompass tasks such as developing a business plan, conducting marketing activities, securing sponsors, arranging travel logistics, exploring sustainable solutions and more. Furthermore, the support team will have the opportunity to travel to England as part of the team and contribute in various ways during the competition.
For students, the project offers valuable hands-on
experience, skill development, networking opportunities, and an impressive
addition to their CVs. For some, it may even serve as a stepping stone towards
an exciting international career opportunity in the future.
Participation in the project is open to all interested students at the Estonian Aviation Academy. However, note that the students who join the project are expected to participate the entire academic year.
What are the benefits of participating in the project?
